Top Division I College Soccer Programs Face-Off To Raise Money For Cancer

WHEN: April 14 - Soccer Games WHERE: Maryland SoccerPlex, Germantown, MD WHAT: Nine of the top Women's College Soccer teams will participate in the 11th Annual KICKS Against Breast Cancer College Tournament on April 14, 2007 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, MD. This event will provide a weekend of college soccer and philanthropy. Gathering some of the best college soccer programs in the country, teams will make a difference off the field in the lives of people affected by cancer. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center: a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine in Columbia, MD, a 501c3 non-profit organization supporting individual's affected by cancer. SCHEDULE: April 14, 2007 - Annual Claudia Mayer Memorial Banquet will be held for all players and guests. The banquet will be held at the Maryland SoccerPlex beginning at 12:30 pm. April 14, 2007 - Games will be held beginning at 9:00 am at the Maryland SoccerPlex fields in Germantown, MD. A double-header match will feature the University of Maryland men vs. the University of Virginia men at 4:00 pm followed by the 2006 NCAA National Champions University of North Carolina vs. the University of Virginia at 6:00 pm. For a full schedule of games visit www.kicksagainstbreastcancer.org HISTORY: The KICKS Against Breast Cancer Intercollegiate Soccer Tournament was established in honor of Claudia Mayer, a friend of tournament Director Louise Waxler (WUSA/Washington Freedom), who passed away in 1996 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Since the inception of the tournament 9 years ago, donations and fundraising by participating teams has totaled more than $575,000. The funds have been used to assist with the operating expenses for Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia, Maryland. Since the inaugural tournament, many other businesses have joined in establishing additional fundraising events.
