Tar Heels Snare Multiple 2002 Individual Honors From Soccer Buzz
Feb. 12, 2003 NEW YORK, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Lindsay Tarpley's selection as the Soccer Buzz 2002 National Freshman of the Year highlights a whole slew of awards won by North Carolina players, the editors of Soccer Buzz internet magazine announced Wednesday morning. Tarpley, who also played forward much of the year, scored 16 goals and had 15 assists for the year. The Kalamazoo, Mich. native and graduate of Portage Central High School, was the top scorer for the Tar Heels and was also named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. Carolina also had several players named Soccer Buzz 2002 All-America. First team selections were Tarpley in the midfielder and junior Catherine Reddick (Birmingham, Ala.), a junior defender for Coach Anson Dorrance's team. Senior defender Leslie Gatson (Montgomery, Ala.) was named second-team All-America, and senior forward Susan Bush (Houston, Texas) and junior forward Alyssa Ramsey (Cornelius, N.C.) were named honorable mention All-Americas. As a forward, Tarpley was tapped a first-team Soccer Buzz 2002 Freshman All-America. Midfielder Lori Chalupny (St. Louis, Mo.) was designated second team status. Goalkeeper Aly Winget (Orinda, Calif.) was tapped as an honorable mention choice. Carolina also had several awards in the Southeast Region. Reddick was named the player of the year in the region and Tarpley copped freshman of the year honors in the Southeast region.
Reddick, Tarpley and Gaston were all named first-team Southeast Region. Bush and Ramsey were named second team, senior goalkeeper Jenni Branam (Placentia, Calif.) was honored with third team accolades and Chalupny and Winget were chosen honorable mention.
