Women's Soccer Earns Regional Honors
Jan. 20, 2002 NEW YORK, N.Y. - The University of North Carolina women's soccer program has earned a host of individual honors from Soccer Buzz magazine for the 2001 season. Awards have been passed out to honor players from the 37 schools in NCAA Division I's Southeast Region. After leading North Carolina to an undefeated regular season and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Championships, Tar Heel seniors Jena Kluegel and Danielle Borgman were named Soccer Buzz Southeast Region Co-Players of the Year. Midfielder Kluegel was a part of the third most productive offense in the nation by contributing eight goals and eight assists for the Tar Heels. Borgman anchored the second stingiest defense as the Heels allowed only 12 goals all season, compiling a 0.48 goals against average. Borgman and Kluegel's shared award marks the sixth consecutive season a Tar Heel has received or shared the region's top player award. Guiding the Tar Heels to a 19th NCAA championship game which included a 33-game winning streak over two seasons, Anson Dorrance was named Southeast Region Coach of the Year. Dorrance had his Heels at #1 in all the polls from preseason until the NCAA title game. UNC claimed its 14th ACC Tournament championship after beginning the season with the fewest returning starters if all ACC teams. This is Dorrance's second coaching honor from Soccer Buzz which awarded him 1997 National and Regional Coach of the Year. Four Tar Heel were named first team All-Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz. They were Kluegel, Borgman, sophomore defender Catherine Reddick and sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey.
Two Tar Heels were named to the Southeast Region All-Freshman Team--forward Anne Morrell and midfielder Sara Randolph.
