Soccer Buzz Names Anson Dorrance National Coach Of The Year
Jan. 11, 2002 NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Soccer Buzz selected Anson Dorrance as National Coach of the Year this week, after leading North Carolina's women's soccer squad to a stellar 24-1 season and an appearance in the 2001 NCAA championship. This season marked the Tar Heels 19th trip to the NCAA final while in addition Dorrance notched his 500th career win and directed UNC to its 13th ACC title in a row. The selection was Dorrance's second from Soccer Buzz, after receiving the honor in 1997. The Tar Heels finished second in the National Rankings, and at one point enjoyed a 33 game winning streak dating back to the 2000 season. North Carolina was also well represented in All-America nominations, leading the way with four total selections. First team honors went to seniors Jena Kluegel and Danielle Borgman, as well as sophomore Catherine Reddick. Sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey was named to the 3rd team. Borgman tied a record by becoming only the 4th woman in the history of the award to be named to the team three times. Freshman Anne Morrell finished 6th in the Freshman of the Year voting. The forward joined teammate Sara Randolph on the freshman All America second team.
Soccer Buzz has recognized top players and coaches since 1996. The publication's awards are decided by voting open to all 278 Division 1 Head Coaches as well as the Soccer Buzz staff.
