Tar Heels Advance to ACC Tournament Finals for 13th Straight Year
Nov. 3, 2000 DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina avenged one of its three regular-season losses Friday night, defeating Florida State 3-0 in the semifinals of the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at Koskinen Stadium. With the victory, the Tar Heels have advanced to the championship game of the tournament for the 13th year in a row. The Tar Heels, who have won the past 11 titles, have now won 30 successive ACC Tournament games dating back to 1989. The victory over the 16th-ranked Seminoles (12-7-2) avenged a 3-2 overtime loss to Florida State on October 17, 2000. That win was FSU's first ever over Carolina. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 15-3 with the win and they will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal match between Clemson and Duke in Sunday's final at 1 p.m. That game will be televised live by Home Team Sports, Fox Sports South and the Sunshine Network. Carolina gained a quick advantage in Friday night's match, barely as the crowd had settled into its seats. Kalli Kamholz launched a long throw in from the left side that was flicked on by the head of Alyssa Ramsey. Maggie Tomecka redirected the ball with the ball of her right heel past Florida State goalkeeper Sarah Crawford. After scoring on their first shot of the half, the Tar Heels continued to dominate the first 45 minutes and on the 12th and final shot of the opening period the Heels struck again when Jena Kluegel took the ball away from a pair of Seminole defenders in the left side of the ball, gathered herself and then rocketed a shot into the lower left corner of the net from 12 yards out. That goal came with 2:59 left in the first half. Carolina then put the game away when Meredith Florance, the nation's second-leading scorer, scored her 22nd goal of the season ay 54:17. After gaining control, Florance dribbled up the right sideline and then turned the corner, beating two FSU defenders in the process, before scoring from 15 yards out on a shot from a tough angle. UNC outshot the Seminoles 21-2. Crawford recorded three saves for the Seminoles while UNC's Jenni Branam recorded her first solo shutout of the season, making two saves, both in the second half.
