Quick Start Helps Heels Top Tigers, 4-0
Sept. 19, 1999
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fourth-ranked North Carolina lit up the scoreboard for three goals in the first 23 minutes of play to fuel a 4-0 victory over 12th-ranked Clemson in women¢s soccer action Sunday night at Fetzer Field. The victory, before a crowd of 3,085, improved UNC to 6-1 on the season, 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers dropped their third straight game and are now 5-3 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. UNC got on the scoreboard at just 3:09 of the match as junior defender Kalli Kahmolz (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.) headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell (Lakewood, Colo.). Carolina went on to convert two more scoring opportunities in the next 19 minutes while the defense buckled down and did not allow a shot in the first half of play. The second Carolina goal came at the 19:15 mark as freshman forward Susan Bush (Houston, Texas) converted from two yards out into an empty net off a nifty passing combination which included senior midfielder Lorrie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.) and junior forward Meredith Florance (Dallas, Texas). Just 3:06 later, Carolina pushed its lead to three goals as sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel (Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored her third goal of the weekend, assisted by Bush and freshman forward Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.). Kluegel gathered a pass at the edge of the box and blasted a shot into the upper left shelf. The Tar Heels finished off the scoring with 13:40 left in the second half as junior midfielder Raven McDonald (Benson, N.C.) headed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal as Bush earned her second assist of the night. The Tar Heel victory spoiled a career effort by Clemson sophomore goalkeeper Katie Carson, who recorded 13 saves in 82 minutes of play. That total was only one short of the Clemson school record of 14 set by Meredith McCullen against N.C. State in an overtime game in the first round of the 1994 ACC Tournament. UNC outshot the Tigers 28-5 and had seven corner kicks to two for Clemson. Carolina returns to action next Friday when the Tar Heels play unanimously #1-ranked Santa Clara at 5 p.m. at the Duke adidas Soccer Classic in Durham, N.C. Admission to the game is free. Duke and USC will play in the second game of the doubleheader Friday night at 7 p.m. The last time Carolina played a #1-ranked team was on December 8, 1996 when UNC defeated top-ranked Notre Dame 1-0 in overtime in the NCAA championship game. #12 CLEMSON 0 0 - 0 #4 NORTH CAROLINA 3 1 - 4
