Tar Heels Release 2009 Schedule

Oct. 6, 2008

  • CHAPEL HILL - University of North Carolina head women's lacrosse coach Jenny Levy released her squad's 2009 schedule this week, presenting a slate that includes seven opponents who were part of the 2008 NCAA Tournament field.

Carolina will host four-time defending national champion Northwestern (March 1) as well as fellow 2008 NCAA qualifiers Virginia and Georgetown in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels will travel to play NCAA participants Vanderbilt, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Duke on the road.

"Like always, we'll be playing a top-ranked schedule next spring with going up to play at UPenn and with Northwestern returning to visit us here in Chapel Hill," Levy said on Monday. "We've got Georgetown back on the schedule after a year's break in our series, and they're going to be really tough, a top-five caliber team this year.

"We're excited about 2009," Levy continued. "We open up with a tough Vanderbilt team on the road, then come home versus Oregon and Richmond, which is a new opponent for us. We travel out to Denver as well."

Carolina will begin its 2009 regular season at Vanderbilt on Feb. 15 before returning home for three consecutive home games against Oregon, Richmond and Northwestern. Back-to-back road trips to Penn and Denver follow.

UNC will play four of five games at home after the March 9 game at Denver, facing Virginia (March 14), Old Dominion (March 18), Georgetown (March 21) and Boston College (March 28) at home. The Tar Heels will play at Virginia Tech on March 25 during that stretch as well.

Carolina will play Ohio State and Penn State in the Atlantic Coast Conference-American Lacrosse Conference Challenge in Columbus, Ohio, on April 3 and 5. UNC then closes the regular season at Maryland (April 11), at Duke (April 17) and at home versus Stanford (April 19).

The 2009 ACC Tournament will be April 23-26 in Blacksburg, Va.

We like the balance of how the schedule breaks down," Levy said. "There's not an easy game on the schedule -- It's going to challenge us, that's for sure. We lost a good-sized class of contributors from last year that we've got to replace, and this schedule will be good for us because each game will command our attention."
