Three Tar Heels Named IWLCA All-Americas
May 30, 2007 CHAPEL HILL - Three University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players earned All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, the IWLCA announced on Wednesday. Senior Jenn Cook was named to the first team while sophomore Amber Falcone and senior Christina Juras earned third-team honors. Last week, Cook and Falcone were named first-team All-South Region by the IWLCA and Juras was named to the second team. Cook is a three-time first-team All-America defender and is one of just three Tar Heels in school history to earn All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors three times. She was regarded as one of the top on-ball defenders in the country and was the anchor of a Tar Heel defense that ranked third in the nation in goals allowed in the latest NCAA statistics. Named the National Defender of the Year by Inside Lacrosse in 2006, Cook led the ACC and was 11th nationally in ground balls this year with over three per game and leads Carolina in draw controls (46) and caused turnovers (30). Cook finished her career as UNC's all-time leader in ground balls and her 71 career games started are second in school history. Falcone is Carolina's top mark-up defender, matching up with top scorers from opposing teams. Falcone limited Blair Weymouth of Virginia to zero goals and one assist earlier this season, held Krista Pelizzi of Maryland to one goal and zero assists and limited Tewaaraton nominee Kjellman of Northwestern to one goal and zero assists. Falcone was named a third-team All-America as a freshman last year and All-ACC this spring. Juras led Carolina this spring in points (57) and was second on the team with 42 goals and 15 assists. She scored goals in every ACC game this season, averaging 2.0 goals per game in conference play. Juras has scored at least two goals in 17 of 21 games this season. She has been named All-ACC honors in each of the last three years, one of just three players in school history to do so. The Tar Heels reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the third year in a row in 2007, falling to eventual national runnerup Virginia by a 14-8 score on May 19 in Charlottesville, Va. Carolina went 16-5 overall in 2007 and 3-2 in the ACC. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the national All-Americas at an awards banquet on June 16, 2007 in King of Prussia, Pa.
