Carolina-Northwestern Game Cancelled Due To Weather, Field Conditions
March 1, 2009
Chapel Hill - The women's lacrosse game between ninth-ranked University of North Carolina and top-ranked Northwestern University, scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus, has been canceled due to poor field conditions and inclement weather. The two teams played the first 10:35 of the first half before further progress was not possible. Heavy rain throughout the weekend made steady footing on Fetzer Field nearly impossible and the game officials made the decision to cancel the game because more heavy rain and possible frozen precipitation were forecast for the afternoon. Carolina was leading by a 4-2 score with 19:25 remaining in the first half when the officials halted the action. Efforts will be made to reschedule the game at some point later in the season but no details are currently available on a makeup date. Carolina got two goals from Kristen Taylor and one apiece from Jenn Russell and Becky Lynch before the game was canceled. Chelsea Parks and Megan Bosica had single assists for the Tar Heels. Northwestern's goals were scored by Danielle Spencer and Shannon Smith, both on unassisted plays. Taylor gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game, taking a pass from Parks, wrapping around the goal and scoring at the 27:02 mark. The Wildcats responded less than a minute later when Spencer scored to tie the score at one apiece. Shortly thereafter, UNC was back up again when Taylor scored on a free position opportunity with 25:28 left in the first half. Russell scored off a pass from Bosica with 24:57 left in the half to make it 3-1 in favor of the Tar Heels before Smith took the ball most of the length of the field for an unassisted goal to make it 3-2 at the 24:24 mark.
Lynch scored an unassisted goal in traffic for Carolina to make the score 4-2 at the 19:25 mark before field conditions became such that the officials called the game. Carolina will return to action on Friday at Penn in Philadelphia, Pa. Goals - Assists - Goalkeepers - |
