UNC Women's Lacrosse Caps Regular Season With OT Win

HANOVER, N.H. -- Sophomore Kellie Thompson's second goal of the afternoon with 49.8 seconds left in overtime propelled No. 6 North Carolina to a 12-11 road victory over No. 2 Dartmouth on Sunday. Thompson's gamewinner capped off a wild contest that featured two free position goals in the final seconds of regulation. The Tar Heels broke a 10-10 tie when senior Meghann Mohler scored on a free position shot for an 11-10 lead with 17 seconds on the clock. But Dartmouth controlled the draw and had an excellent chance to tie when sophomore Alison Moulin fired a pointblank shot with eight seconds left, but UNC goalie Melissa Coyne made the save, one of 21 for her on the day. The Big Green forced the overtime when junior Suzy Gibbons connected on a free position opportunity with eight-tenths of a second remaining. Dartmouth jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first 12 minutes as Amy Frazier scored the Big Green's first two goals of day. With 10 minutes remaining, UNC closed to within one, 5-4, on an Erin McInnes goal. Dartmouth answered with goals by Gibbons and Whitney Jamison for a 7-4 halftime lead. The second half was one of runs. The Tar Heels scored four unanswered goals -- two by senior Kristin Off -- in the first 4:16 of the second half for an 8-7 lead. Dartmouth then ripped off three,including two by the nation's leading goal scorer, Jacque Weitzel, for a 10-8 advantage with 18:48 left in regulation. That set the stage for three straight UNC goals. Nicole Foran took a feed from Off to get within one, 10-9, and senior Christine McPike had her third of the game for a 10-10 tie with 12:03 left. With the victory, North Carolina capped off the regular season with a 12-5 record. Dartmouth, 11-3, travels to Syracuse on Saturday, May 6 for the final regular season game. Both teams await news of the NCAA tournament which begins on Thursday, May 11, with first-round action. Dartmouth was without the services of senior Kate Graw, one of the nation's leading scorers, who was hospitalized early in the day with appendicitis.
