Chapel Hill, N.C. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team got four goals and three assists by sophomore Kellie Thompson and defeated Virginia Tech 18-7 at Fetzer Field on Sunday. The Tar Heels also had four players score three goals including Kristin Off, Amy Havrilla, Christine McPike and Betsy Gaines.

Kellie Thompson opened the scoring for Carolina, taking a pass from Gray MacNair and putting it past Hokie goalie Stacey Rainbolt at the 29:28 mark. Virginia Tech answered two minutes later on a goal by Kate Bjorke that was assisted by Sam Sybert. The Tar Heels followed that with four unanswered goals with two by Thompson, and one each by Off and Havrilla to give Carolina a 5-1 lead at the 22:27 mark.

Virginia Tech closed to within 6-5 on an unassisted goal by Karen Diacont with 4:51 left in the first half, but that was as close they would come. Carolina closed out the game with runs of 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 surrounding Virgina Tech's final two goals for the 18-7 final.

The Tar Heels outshot the Hokies 35-14, including a 17-2 advantage in the second half and had six different players deliver their eight assists. The Tar Heels also collected 26 ground balls compared to Virginia Tech's 15.

The win improves UNC's record to 7-3 on the season and drops Virgina Tech to 3-4. Carolina will next travel to Wahington, D.C. to face Georgetown on Saturday.
