March 25, 2000

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Seventh-ranked North Carolina went on a 7-1 scoring run in the final 23:35 of the game to grind out a 12-5 upset win over third-rated Virginia in women's lacrosse at the University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va. With the victory, Coach Jenny Slingluff Levy's team improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia fell to 6-2 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. The Cavaliers' only two losses have come to #1 Maryland and #7 North Carolina.

Junior midfielder Amy Havrilla had three goals to lead the Tar Heels while freshman midfielder Betsy Gaines had two goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Meghann Mohler had a pair of goals and sophomore attackwoman Kellie Thompson added a troika of assists to go with one goal.

Virginia was led by two goals each by Jamie Haas and Sarah Gercke. Gercke's goal with 25:41 left in the first half gave the Wahoos their only lead of the game. Thompson tied the game with 22:52 left in the first half and then 2:03 later Havrilla scored the first of her three goals to put Carolina up for good in the game.

The Wahoos would twice cut the Tar Heel lead to one goal, the second time with 27:41 to play in the game on Gercke's second goal. UNC's Erin McInnes and Lindsay Stone countered with a pair of tallies for UNC before Haas scored with 16:01 left to cut the Virginia deficit to 7-5.

From then on it was all Carolina as the Heels ran off five straight goals, including four in the last 10 minutes. Mohler scored both of her goals in the scoring run and single markers were run up by Gaines, Havrilla and Christine McPike.

Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Coyne had a stellar day in the goal for the Tar Heels as she had 11 saves and allowed only five goals. Carolina has now won two in a row against the Cavaliers and it leads the all-time series, 5-3.

The Tar Heels have little time to rest as fifth-ranked Duke (5-2) will visit Frances E. Henry Stadium on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Carolina will be out to avenge an 8-7 loss at the hands of the Blue Devils last year in Durham, N.C. The third-ranked Cavaliers will next be in action next Friday when they play at #4 Princeton at 3 p.m.

#7 North Carolina (6-2, ACC 2-0) vs. #3 Virginia (6-2, ACC 0-2)
