CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kellie Thompson scored four goals and tallied two assists as No. 5 North Carolina defeated No. 17 Vanderbilt, 13-8, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. With the win, UNC improves to 4-1 on the season. Vanderbilt falls to 0-3. Carolina has won four straight games after losing its season opener at No. 7 James Madison. Three of those Tar Heel wins have come against ranked teams.

Vanderbilt scored the first goal of the game when April Tellam scored unassisted at 28:29. The Tar Heels then responded with three goals in an 85-second span. Gray MacNair scored on a free position shot at 20:36. Kellie Thompson scored off a Christine McPike assist at 19:43 and Erin McInnes scored off a McPike assist at 19:11. Vandy responded with a Becky Kehl goal at 16:42 before Carolina ripped off three more quick goals to take a 6-2 lead. Carolina led, 8-4, at halftime.

Vanderbilt scored three of the first four goals in the second half to cut UNC's lead to 9-7. The Tar Heels then responded by scoring four of the game's final five goals to ice the victory. Thompson scored two of the goals that allowed Carolina to seal the win.

Tellam scored three goals for the Commodores while Sue Napolitano added two.

Sophomore Melissa Coyne started her third straight game in goal and went the distance for the Tar Heels, making five saves.

The Tar Heels return to action on Friday when they play Boston University in Baltimore, Md., at 7:00 p.m.
