CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina outscored Johns Hopkins 8-0 after halftime to break a 6-6 tie and earn a 14-6 victory in women's lacrosse action Friday evening at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Sophomore Kellie Thompson led the Tar Heels with four goals, while freshman Betsy Gaines tallied three goals and one assist.

Unranked Johns Hopkins kept pace with the No. 5-ranked Tar Heels throughout the first half, scoring the first goal of the game and scoring three straight goals in just over a minute to lead, 5-2, with 9:07 left in the first half.

UNC responded with four consecutive goals to take a 6-5 lead with 0:38 left in the first half. The Blue Jays' Jamie Larrimore, who had three goals in the opening half, scored on a free position shot with 0:00 left before halftime to even the score at 6-6 at the break.

Carolina exploded in the second half, scoring four goals in the first eight minutes of the half and cruising to the 14-6 win. Lindsay Stone, Erin McInnes and Amy Havrilla all had two goals for UNC. Christine McPike had a goal and an assist and Meghann Mohler had an assist.

In addition to Larrimore's three goals, Danielle Maschuci had two goals and Erinn Dennis had one for Johns Hopkins.

The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday when they host No. 1-ranked and five-time defending national champion Maryland at Henry Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
