Carolina Gymnasts Named To All-League Teams

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- The University of North Carolina had three gymnasts named to the All-EAGL first team on the vault, beam and all-around competitions when the EAGL All-League teams were announced on Monday afternoon. Senior Susan Cunningham, a native of Raleigh, N.C., was named to the first team on vault. Cunningham had a season-high score of 9.800, which she received at the 1998 EAGL Championships on March 21. The 9.800 is the fourth-highest vault score in Carolina history. She is the school record holder on vault with a 9.875. Freshman Brooke Wilson, a native of Sumter, S.C., was named to the first team on beam. Wilson received a season-high score of 9.825 three times, at the Hearts Invitational on February 13 and versus Radford on both January 30 and January 10. The 9.825 placed Wilson in a tie for third place on Carolina's top-10 beam scores. Wilson was also a unanimous selection to the first team in the all-around competition, scoring a season-high 38.625 at the Hearts Invitational. The 38.625 is the third highest all-around score in Carolina history. Wilson will be competing as a #1 seed in the NCAA Championships on April 4 in Athens, Ga. Three Carolina gymnasts were also named to the second team on bars, floor and all-around. Shelley Austin, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., was named to the second team on bars. Austin received a season-high score of 9.850 against George Washington University on February 27. The 9.850 is the third highest bars score in Carolina history. Named to the second team on floor was Ashley Simpson, a junior from Charlotte, N.C. Simpson received a season-high score of 9.800 versus William & Mary on February 21. The 9.800 is the fourth highest floor exercise score in Carolina history. Simpson holds the school record on floor with a 9.875. The last Tar Heel gymnast recognized was senior Amanda Mitchell, who was named to the second team in all-around competition. Mitchell, a native of Altamonte Springs, Fla., received a season-high score of 38.525 versus George Washington University on February 27. The 38.525 places Mitchell in fourth place on Carolina's top-10 all-around scores. Mitchell is the school record holder in the all-around with a 38.925. Mitchell will be competing as a #2 seed alongside teammate Wilson at the NCAA Championships on April 4.
