Gymnastics Spotlight: Rachel Schneider
Oct. 21, 2008
1) How did you get started in gymnastics? My mom put me in classes when I was three and I just continued doing it because I was good at it. And I was good because I was hyperactive. 2) What is your favorite and least favorite event? And why? Uneven bars is my favorite because things come to me a little more naturally on it. Vault is my least favorite because I go kamikaze on it and it's scary. 3) What has been your proudest gymnastics moment in your collegiate career? When I competed on bars for the first time after my shoulder surgery. My coaches and trainers didn't really expect me to be able to do it, but I really wanted to. So, I was really to finally do it. 4) Of all your teammates, past and present, who have you learned the most from? And why? One of my teammates from home, Tracy, was one of the least talented gymnasts I ever knew, but she was the hardest worker ever and she did way more than anyone ever thought she would. 5) What do you like most about being an athlete at UNC? I really like how close the whole athlete community is. You get to know a lot of the other athletes and make friends with lots of people on different teams. 6) What is the best advice you have ever received? It was from our assistant coach, Penny Jernigan, who told me to stay in the moment and not get too caught up on mistakes you already made or think about what's coming next; just focus on the present. 7) Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions? Besides putting a ton of hairspray in my hair so it won't move and making sure that I have snacks to get me through the meet, not really. 8) Since this is your last year competing in college, what do you think you will miss the most? I'm going to miss all the time spent with the team, both in and out of the gym.
9) Who in your life do you admire the most? And why? I admire my brother the most because he knows exactly who he is and is not afraid to be himself all the time. 10) What are your post-graduation plans? Well, currently I'm working on getting a job. I am looking for positions in banking and I'm pretty much willing to go anywhere. |
