Tar Heel Gymnastics 2008 Schedule Released

Sept. 30, 2007

The University of North Carolina gymnastics team, led by head coach Derek Galvin, has released its 2008 schedule. Boasting a competitive nine-meet regular season, the gymnastics team will also have an opportunity to compete for its third East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship title in the last four years.

Opening with the George Washington Invitational on Saturday, January 19th, the Tar Heels will have to cope with the complexities of a multi-team event. However, Galvin believes it is a great opportunity to begin the season.

"We are all looking forward to the first meet, which I believe will help the athletes to deal with multiple distractions and will set the precedent for the rest of the season."

With only three home meets this year, the gymnasts open against ACC rivals N.C. State on Sunday, February 10th.

"Every meet vs. N.C. State is exciting, leaving people on the edge of their seat," says Galvin. Competition and emotions are always high as these two teams face-off; meets often coming down to the last competitors."

The Tar Heels also are excited to welcome nationally-ranked Florida to Carmichael Auditorium on February 22nd.

The gymnastics team will bring a close to its home schedule with the Tar Heel Invitational, hosting Maryland, New Hampshire, and William & Mary on Saturday, March 1st. Galvin believes this meet will give his gymnasts a chance to test themselves against two other EAGL teams.

With a lot to look forward to in the upcoming season, the UNC gymnastics team is training with the goal of being EAGL Champions once again.
