Tar Heel Gymnastics Builds Toward the 2009 Season
Sept. 25, 2008 On Saturday, September 20th the Carolina gymnastics team took one step to building toward the 2009 season by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. The team worked together, helping to raise walls for families in need. The next construction in the team's future is to begin building up the team to get ready for the 2009 competitive season. The 2009 schedule has been released and the Tar Heels are excited to continue to prepare for the competition. "We're excited about the schedule because it gives us a chance to go up against some of the top teams in the nation," said head coach Derek Galvin. "It's going to be challenging due to the renovation of Carmichael Auditorium and we won't have any home meets this year, but we will have three meets at N.C. State, just down the road for our local fans." For the first time, the gymnastics program will travel out of the country with a meet in Cancun, Mexico. At the Cancun Classic, on January 2nd, the team will face some very strong competition with Stanford University, Louisiana State University, Oregon State, and the University of Michigan; four of the top ten teams in the country last year. The Tar Heels will also go on the road this season to face Louisiana State University, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Alabama. As a traditionally strong gymnastics conference, the meets against SEC (Southeastern Conference) rivals will test the mettle of the UNC gymnasts. The Carolina gymnastics team is looking forward to sharing the excitement of this season with all the Carolina gymnastics fans, friends, and family. The EAGL Championship this year will be hosted by N.C. State and with that close proximity to Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels are hoping to boast a large crowd.
