Tar Heels Advance To NCAA Regionals

March 31, 2008

Chapel Hill, N.C. ------ The University of North Carolina gymnastics team has landed a spot in the NCAA Southeast Regional and will compete on Saturday, April 12, at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida at 7 p.m. The Tar Heels earned a spot in the NCAA regional for the seventh straight season.

The regional competition in Gainesville, Fla., will include Florida, UCLA, Nebraska and fellow East Atlantic Gymnastics members NC State and West Virginia. The top two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., on April 24.

Carolina battled through an injury-plagued season to capture the sixth spot in the Southeast Region with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 194.185. For much of the year, the Tar Heels were forced to participate on events with just five competitors instead of the normal six.

North Carolina's Christine Nguyen was recently named the EAGL MVP and won the all-around at the conference meet last weekend. She is ranked 10th nationally on the balance beam.
