Gymnastics Hosts First Home Meet of Season and Women's Health Fair Sunday
Feb. 9, 2007 The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will host the Tar Heel Invitational Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. In its first home meet of the season, Carolina will compete against NC State, George Washington, James Madison, and Wisconsin-Oshkosh. In conjunction with the meet, the Tar Heels are also hosting their second annual Women's Health Fair starting at 1:30 p.m. The Health Fair hopes to raise awareness for pancreatic and breast cancer, as well as, honor women whose lives have been affected by cancer. Also at the Health Fair, educational material and other resources will be provided to help individuals and families currently dealing with cancer. The North Carolina gymnastics team enters the meet with a record of 7-3. Carolina is coming off a second place finish at the Governor's Cup on Feb. 2. NC State narrowly won the meet with a 194.600, while North Carolina finished second with a 194.200, Maryland was third at 191.925, and Towson placed fourth with a 191.850. The Wolfpack and the Tar Heels combined for a score of 388.880, as the state of North Carolina won the Governor's Cup for the sixth consecutive time over the state of Maryland (383.775). Following the Governor's Cup, senior Christine Robella was named co-East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week and Christine Nguyen claimed the EAGL Rookie of the Week honor for the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6. Robella, placed second in the all-around at the Governor's Cup with a score of 39.275. She also placed third on the vault (9.875), tied for first on bars (9.800), tied second on the beam (9.750), first on floor (9.850). This was the second time that Robella received the honor this season. Nguyen placed first in the all-around with a season-high score of 39.325 at the Governor's Cup. She also placed first on the beam (9.825), tied for first on the vault (9.900), second on the floor (9.825), third on the bars (9.775). The Women's Health Fair begins at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, followed by the Tar Heel Invitational at 2 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium.
