Tar Heels Hit the Mark on Senior Night
March 23, 2007 The University of North Carolina gymnastics team honored its four seniors at Friday's meet by sending them out with one final win at Carmichael Auditorium. In front of a large, cheering crowd, the Tar Heels ended the meet with a score of 194.300. Towson placed second with 193.500, followed by George Washington at 193.225, Rhode Island at 190.725, and William & Mary at 189.225. Competing for her last time at home, senior Christine Robella had an outstanding Senior Night, capturing first place in the all-around (39.425), uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. On vault, she tied with teammate Kara Wright for second place. Carolina's win ended a three game losing streak and sets the team in the right direction as they prepare for next week's EAGL Championships. The Tar Heels began the meet on vault where freshman Christine Nguyen tied her personal best and captured the highest score on that event with a 9.900. Freshman Kara Wright and Robella also had solid performances both receiving a 9.825 on the event. Leading the way on uneven bars, Robella finished with a 9.875, her highest performance of the season. Shawna Kelly also had an extremely strong performance on uneven bars, setting a career best 9.825. On balance beam, Robella took the top spot with a 9.825 while Tina Jacob's score of 9.800 secured her second place. One of the highlights of the meet came on floor exercise, where the Tar Heels finished with a team score of 48.425. Besides winning the event, Robella also tied her season high score on floor exercise (9.900). Equally impressive, Sarrie Rubin tied her season and career high with a score of 9.800 earning her third place.
Carolina's next meet is on March 30 at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. The team goes into the meet having won the EAGL Championship three of the last five years. |
