Tar Heels Finish Second In Final Gymnastics Home Meet
March 3, 2000
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior standout Brooke Wilson broke two more North Carolina all-time records as the University of North Carolina women's gymnastics team finished in second place behind Towson University on Friday night in the final home meet for the Tar Heel women this season. Towson's team score of 195.425 was too much for Carolina's score of 194.950 as well as third place finisher Yale University with 189.825.
Wilson has enjoyed much success during the Tar Heels' three-week home stand in Carmichael Auditorium for she set all-time records on bars and floor against James Madison and William & Mary and outdid herself on Friday night by breaking those records yet again. Wilson's score of 9.925 on bars eclipsed her previously held record of 9.900 and her score of 9.975 on floor broke her old record of 9.950. Wilson also set a personal high score on the vault with a 9.850 score.
Also excelling individually for the Tar Heels were seniors Julie Pasqualini and Meredith McDermott who along with the remaining Tar Heel seniors Jodi Meadows, Megan Piper, Erica Roberts and Kelly Walker, were honored with their parents in attendance prior to the meet. Pasqualini set a personal best score on vault with a 9.750 mark and also placed third on both the bars (9.850) and floor (9.800). McDermott's all-around score of 38.700 was a collegiate high for her as well.
For Towson, Gabi Weller captured the all-around title (39.350) with first place finishes on vault (9.925) and bars (9.950) as well as a third place finish on beam with a 9.825 score.
Tar Heel sophomore Lisa Companioni captured first place on the beam with a career high 9.875 score.
The Tar Heels set their second-highest team total ever on Friday night with their score of 194.950 which is only .1 off the highest mark of 195.050 set in last season's meet against Towson and Rhode Island.
The North Carolina gymnasts venture into Raleigh, N.C. next Friday night to compete in the Wolf Pack Invitational held at N.C. State University. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m.
