Tar Heel Gymnasts Top James Madison
Feb. 18, 2000 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina gymnastics team won its 2000 home opener against James Madison University Friday night with a score of 194.575. Junior Brooke Wilson placed first in the all-around with a score of 38.900. She scored a 9.750 on vault, a 9.300 on uneven bars, a 9.900 on balance beam and a 9.950 on floor to claim her third all-around title of the season. During her floor routine, Wilson performed a full-in it was the first time this tumbling pass was ever performed in Carmichael Auditorium. Sophomore Monica Middleton placed first on vault (9.80), first on beam (9.925) and fifth in the floor (9.725). "She had the best meet of her collegiate career," UNC coach Derek Galvin. Galvin also praised the performances of his senior class, which he calls "the backbone of the program." Senior Julie Pasqualini placed first on bars (9.850) and tied for third on floor with fellow UNC senior Erica Roberts (9.750). Senior Megan Piper placed second on bars (9.825). Senior Meredith McDermott recorded a personal best in the all-around, placing third with a fifth place finish on vault (9.625) and sixth place finish on bars (9.600). The underclassmen had a strong showing as well. Freshmen Natalie Halbach finished third on vault with a 9.700. Freshmen Fritzie Cathcart finished fourth on bars (9.775) and sophomore Lisa Companioni finished fourth on the beam (9.800). After beginning the season with five away meets, the Tar Heels will now enjoy a string of three at home. Carolina hosts William & Mary on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. and Towson and Yale on March 3 at 7 p.m.
