CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina battled against James Madison University to win another home meet tonight. The competition ended in a Tar Heel victory, 195.975 - 189.925. Carolina gymnasts managed to break their team record for the floor exercises (49.275, set at the Governor's Cup Meet at Maryland on Feb. 4, 2002) as well as their final team record (195.075, set a year ago today, Feb. 17, 2001 at NC State) by scoring 49.550 and 195.975, respectively.

Carolina had the top finishers in every event. Sophomore Anna Wilson and Junior Fritzie Cathcart tied for first on vault with a 9.800. Senior Monica Middleton and Freshman Olivia Trusty tied for first on bars by also earning 9.800. Senior Lisa Companioni won on beam scoring a 9.900. Finally, Olivia Trusty and Anna Wilson led on floor with scores of 9.950. Anna Wilson, Monica Middleton and Sophomore Maddy Curley took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the all-around, finishing with 39.225, 39.200 and 38.900, respectively.

The Tar Heels held the top four spots in every event except beam in which two James Madison gymnasts tied with Junior Natalie Halbach for 2nd place (9.850). On vault, Olivia Trusty took 3rd (9.725) and Lisa Companioni took 4th (9.700). On bars, Anna Wilson finished 3rd (9.750) and Maddy Curley finished 4th (9.725). Maddy Curley and Monica Middleton tied for 3rd place in the floor exercises with a 9.900.

 

 

Carolina's impressive meet leaves the team with a record of 11-6. The team will compete in its last 2002 home meet on Friday, February 22 when it hosts Towson and William and Mary in Carmichael Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.
