Chapel Hill, N.C. - The UNC gymnastics team finished strong on floor exercise today, edging the Wolfpack of N.C. State in the Tar Heels' first home meet of the season. The Tar Heels had a combined team score of 195.450, their highest so far in the 2008 season. The Wolfpack finished just behind the Tar Heels with a score of 194.975. The EAGL rivals competed in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 1,142 people. "This was our best meet so far and we can only go up from here," said senior Sarrie Rubin. "It was exciting being in front of our home crowd because everyone was cheering for us and the enthusiasm pushes us to compete at our best." Every meet between these two teams proves to be exciting and competitive, and this meet was no exception.

The Tar Heels came out strong on vault, with three gymnasts tying for first with a score of 9.850. Sarrie Rubin, Jennifer Valby and Christine Nguyen led UNC gymnasts on vault to score a team total of 49.20 on the event. Sophomore Christine Nguyen said, "I believe vault was our best event today. We've been working really hard during practice on that event and we improved a lot from last meet." Nguyen finished first in the all-around competition for the third meet in a row, scoring 39.375 and placing first on all four events.

Head Coach Derek Galvin said, "At this point in the season we want to improve each week, regardless of the opponent. . Vault was exceptional; the strongest we've been since NCAAs last year. We still have room to improve, though. Some of the mistakes we made on the other events were just a case of us being too powerful. The gymnasts love a crowd and we had a great crowd today. They wanted to show what they can do in front of their family, friends and fans. The team goal entering each meet is to compete with high energy and enthusiasm."

With the win today, the University of North Carolina gymnastics team takes their season to 9-0. They will look to continue their success in Morgantown, West Virginia as they face West Virginia University on Friday, February 15th at 8:00 p.m.
