CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina gymnasts finished victorious over George Washington University and Bowling Green State University in their home meet tonight. In a strong performance, the Tar Heels led the meet with a score of 193.825, followed by Bowling Green with 192.675 and George Washington with 191.900. This improves the 2002 Carolina gymnastics record to 10-6.

Freshman Olivia Trusty grabbed two first place finishes, winning the floor exercises with a personal best of 9.900 and tying for first on vault with a 9.800. Senior Lisa Companioni also earned a first place finish, scoring a 9.800 on the balance beam.

Senior Monica Middleton won the All-Around with a 39.050 by placing within the top ten in all four events. She took second on beam (9.750), fifth on vault (9.700), sixth on bars (9.775), and tied for third on floor (9.825).

In vault, Carolina gymnasts stole the first (Olivia Trusty 9.800), third (Freshman Amy Williams, 9.775), fourth (Sophomore Anna Wilson 9.725) and fifth (Monica Middleton 9.700) spots. Similarly, on beam, the team finished first, second, third and fourth. Lisa Companioni won with 9.800, Monica Middleton followed with 9.750, Junior Natalie Halbach took third with 9.725 and Freshman Elisabeth Alsop and Anna Wilson tied for fourth with 9.675. This was a personal best for Anna Wilson. Monica Middleton and Anna Wilson finished first and second all-around, receiving scores of 39.050 and 38.700, respectively.

 

 

Carolina's next meet will be Sunday February 17 at 5:00 p.m. The Tar Heels will host James Madison in Carmichael Auditorium.
