North Carolina Gymnastics Relinquishes Governor's Cup Crown
Feb. 5, 2000
TOWSON, Md. - After winning the state-claimed title for the first time last season, the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University were unable to fulfill their quest to become repeat champions against Towson University and the University of Maryland on Friday at the fifth annual Governor's Cup. The 23rd ranked Terrapins set a school record with their 1995.95 team score to place first overall, while the Tigers recorded a season high score of 194.775. The Maryland schools' combined score of 390.725 was too much for the usual in-state rival team of the Tar Heels (191.525) and the Wolfpack (193.750) as they recorded a combined score of 385.275. The Maryland state duo's Governor's Cup title marked their fourth victory at this event in five years against the state of North Carolina. In individual competition, sophomores Gillian Cote and Laura Moon of Maryland finished one-two in the all-around. Tar Heel junior Brooke Wilson finished third in the all-around with a 38.850 score. Wilson finished in a three-way tie for third place in the vault with a season high score of 9.850. She landed in a three-way tie for second place on the balance beam with a 9.850 score and also finished in sixth place on the floor with a 9.875 score. Junior Jill Fisher of Maryland earned the school's first perfect 10.0 score to finish first on the floor exercise. For the second straight year Tar Heel senior Erica Roberts tied with teammate Brooke Wilson for second place on the balance beam at the Governor's Cup. Roberts score of 9.850 tied her career-high mark that she set in last year's meet against Towson and Rhode Island. The Tar Heels' next stop is Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face the University of Alabama in a dual meet beginning at 7:00 p.m. of Friday, February 11th.
