Carolina Gymnasts Fall To Rhode Island
Jan. 31, 2000 KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior sensation Brooke Wilson stole the show Saturday in the dual meet matching the University of North Carolina and the University of Rhode Island. Even though the Tar Heels fell short by a 192.025 to 191.450 margin, Wilson's all-around performance was worthy of incredible merit as she would break two all-time records in the floor exercise and all-around score. The Tar Heels dominated on the floor as the all-time record was actually broken twice on Saturday. First, senior Julie Pasqualini's floor performance briefly earned her the honor of being the record holder for that event. Pasqualini became the first Tar Heel ever to score over 9.900 on the floor exercise as she posted a 9.900 for her routine. The previous record held in the floor exercise was 9.875 by 1999 graduate Ashley Simpson. However, the very next competitor for Carolina would be Wilson where she would post a 9.950 for her routine to push her past Pasqualini's newly acquired honor. Her 9.950 on the floor earned Wilson first place honors. Wilson did not stop her all-around dominance on the floor for she would post scores of 9.775 on the vault to finish first, 9.800 on the bars for second place and a 9.900 score for the beam to earn a first place tie with Luci West of Rhode Island. Wilson's 9.900 score on the beam was not a school record, for she holds the record at 9.950, but she is still the only Tar Heel to ever score above a 9.900 on the beam. With her tremendous all-around performance, Wilson earned yet her second school record on the day with a school best 39.425 score for all-around competition breaking her previously held personal record of 39.325 scored at last season's EAGL Championships. Other Tar Heels who excelled this past weekend included freshmen Fritzie Cathcart and Anne Chaffee. Cathcart would post a fourth place finish on the vault with a 9.675 score which was second best for the Tar Heels on Saturday. Chaffee performed well on the floor as she posted a 9.550, which was the third best floor score for the Tar Heels. Senior Meredith McDermott placed second in the all-around competition with a total of 37.050. Her best performances were on the beam (9.700) and vault (9.550) where she place fifth and sixth respectively. Carolina ventures to Towson University on Friday, February 4th to compete at the Governor's Cup. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m. TEAM STANDINGS
