Gymnastics Dominates George Washington Invitational
Jan. 21, 2007
Washington, D.C. - The University of North Carolina gymnastics team proved once again its supremacy of the George Washington Invitational by winning the annual event for a fifth straight year Sunday afternoon. Carolina, with a total of 190.650, defeated George Washington (190.000), Cornell (185.925), and William & Mary (184.625) to improve its record to 4-0. In their second meet of the season, the Tar Heels once again swept every event on their way to victory. Carolina captured the top three places for the all-around, with senior Christine Robella finishing first (38.450) followed by freshmen Christine Nguyen (37.775) and Teri Diamond (37.750). Proving herself to be an experienced veteran, Robella captured first place on vault (9.700) and floor exercise (9.750). "Robella did a great job leading this team to victory," says Coach Derek Galvin. "We need a few more meets to regain consistency because this is such a young team, but we're looking forward to our continued progress throughout the year." Although still getting adjusted to the college format, Nguyen made a huge impact winning first place on uneven bars (9.775) and beam (9.850). The freshmen class of Nguyen, Diamond, and Tina Jacob once again showed their strength on balance beam capturing three of the top five spots on that event. "We're very fortunate to have won this meet because we did count some falls on floor exercise," explains Galvin. "The team learned a lot from this meet, especially the freshmen. In a four-team meet like this one, there are so many distractions; so we learned that we need to focus a lot more and be more prepared for such disturbances. Overall, I'm very pleased with the team's enthusiasm and energy." Currently 4-0, The Tar Heels will return to action on Friday, Jan. 26 at the University of Kentucky.
