UNC Gymnastics Dominates Season Opener
Jan. 15, 2000 RADFORD, Va. -- Junior standout Brooke Wilson claims victory in all four individual events en route to winning the all-around competition title to help the University of North Carolina women's gymnastics team defeat Radford University in Saturday's dual meet held at Radford University. Senior Meredith McDermott finished second in the all-around competition with a score of 37.725 behind Wilson's score of 39.100. The Tar Heels, after ending the 1999 season with an impressive 17-5 record, continued their team success as Carolina compiled a total team score of 190.850 to Radford's total of 181.300 to win their first meet of the season (1-0). In individual competition, Carolina placed at least four gymnasts in the top six spots in all four events. Last season's recipient for the Tar Heels' most outstanding gymnast continued her dominance as Wilson placed first in the vault (9.750), uneven parallel bars (9.750), balance beam (9.850), floor (9.750) and the all-around competition. McDermott finished second in the all-around competition by placing fifth in the vault (9.475), uneven parallel bars (9.500) and the floor (9.400). She placed sixth in the balance beam with a score of 9.350. Tar Heel senior Julie Pasqualini placed second in both the uneven parallel bars (9.625), floor exercise (9.625) and placed fourth in the vault (9.500). North Carolina travels to Washington, D.C. next Sunday to compete in the George Washington Invitational. Other teams competing are William & Mary, Radford, Temple University, and the University of Pennsylvania. TEAM STANDINGS 1. UNC 190.850 2. Radford 181.300
