UNC Women's Golf Team Inks One Recruit

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina women's golf coach Sally Austin announced the signing of Courtney Gunter from Matthews, N.C., who will join the Tar Heel team in the fall of 2009. "We are thrilled Courtney will be joining the Tar Heel women's golf team in the fall of 2009," says Austin. "Courtney is a terrific student as well as a great golfer. She has a stellar junior record and we are looking forward to having her as a member of the team in 2009-10." Gunter, who attended Porter Ridge High School, was a 2008 Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention and the N.C. High School 1A/2A/3A State Champion the last three years (2006, 2007, 2008). She was a three-time South Piedmont Conference Player of the Year (2005, 2007, 2008) and two-time Charlotte Observer Player of the Year (2006, 2007). Gunter was selected the 2008 NC Junior Player of the Year and named a 2008 HP Scholastic Junior All-America. She was a quarterfinalist at the 2008 U.S. Girls Junior Amateur, tied for third at the 2008 Heritage Junior Championship, tied for fourth place at the 2008 McDonald's Betsy Rawls Championship and finished seventh at the 2008 Trusted Choice Big I Junior Classic. Gunter was recently selected the female 2008 N.C. Junior Player of the Year by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association, a division of the Carolinas Golf Association. In 2007, Gunter was named an EA Sports All-America and advanced to the third round of the Women's North and South Amateur. She won the 2007 AJGA Golf Pride Junior Classic, qualified for match play at the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links and carded six AJGA top-five finishes.
