Carolina Comes Up Big in Match Play

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team completed two rounds of match play at the National Golf Coaches Association Collegiate Match Play Championship on Monday after being seeded in the consolation bracket in Sunday's qualifier. Carolina lost the first round, but took the second. Combining all individual matches in the two rounds,the Tar Heels can claim four matches won, five lost, and one tied. The Tar Heels were overtaken in the first round of match play against Georgia State, but the Heels' matches were highlighted with strong attempts to keep the scorecards square. Georgia State's Iliska Verway, Ellie Robinson and Sandra Maier beat out sophomore Catherine O'Donnell, freshman Courtney Gunter and junior transfer Sarah Thead, respectively, by one hole. Junior Margaret Pentrack and senior Kate Thomas could not hang on against Georgia State's Cathrine Madsen and Charlotte Lorentzen. Madsen took five holes on Pentrack with four holes to go while Lorentzen took Thomas by four holes with three to go. Carolina faired much better in the second set of matches on the day whenthey took on Central Florida.
Gunter, a newcomer to the Tar Heels out of Matthews, N.C., made her name known in collegiate golf by annihilating Katie Detlefsen with a six hole lead through 14 holes. O'Donnell, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., also made a strong showing against Central Florida's Valentina Fontaine by taking the match on four holes with three left toplay. Thead, a talent added to the Carolina roster after transferring from Auburn, took her match against Victoria Tomko with a surge towards the endto go up by three with one hole left. Jordan Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., relieved Thomas for the afternoon. Allyne fought a hard battle with Elisa Aoki and won it on the last hole. Margaret Pentrack halved her match with Carolin Pinegger after a tie. There was one major upset of the day: South Carolina was ranked secondafter Sunday's qualifying round, but the Gamecocks succumbed to Virginia inthe first round of match play and then fell again to Alabama. The championship final will be held all day Tuesday and will be the first All Southeastern Conference final in the seven-year history of the NGCA Collegiate Match Play Championship. LSU, ranked fourth in the qualifier will take on second-ranked Auburn for the event title. The NGCA Collegiate Match Play Championship is the only match play even onthe collegiate schedule. The tournament was played at the LPGA International Legends Course which features a par 72, 6,280-yard lay-out.
