Tar Heels Stand Alone At Third In First Round Of Tar Heel Invitational
Oct. 3, 2008
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Women's golf team hosted the first day of this year's Tar Heel Invitational. Carolina finished the day at 11-over par 299, placing them third behind Wake Forest and Virginia which are tied at six-over par 294 for the lead. "It was a beautiful day, and the course could not be in better condition," coach Sally Austin said. "Everything was set for there to be some good scores." Austin was extremely grateful to the Finley Golf Course staff for their hard work in preparation for the tournament. Senior Lauren Hunt of Little River, S.C., shot even par 72 for the day, tying for sixth place with three other players. Catherine O'Donnell, a freshman from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., finished two-over par to tie with 10 others at 14th. Freshman Allie White, a Lancaster, Ohio native, posted a four-over 76 and tied for 33th alongside sophomore teammate Jordan Allyne, who competed as an individual. The final two starters for the Tar Heels were junior Kate Thomas, of Murwillumbah, Australia, and senior Sydney Crane, of Jamestown, N.C. Thomas and Crane both shot five-over 77 and finished the day tied at 37th. "We hung in there. I think we hit the ball well," Austin said, "We didn't make as many putts as maybe we could have. But, hey, that's part of it. We've got tomorrow and we'll make some more putts. I'll tell the team to just keep hitting it like we're doing and be patient, because the putts will drop. I mean, some days you make them, and some days you don't make as many as you want. The putts are going to drop for us if we keep patient. We're in good shape." Virginia's Lene Krog and Jennie Arseneault, Kent State's Mercedes Germino, and Wake Forest's Natalie Sheary and Nannette Hill all finished the day by shooting one-under par. Wake Forest and Virginia battled for the team lead most of the day, swapping between first and second until play concluded. They begin Saturday's second round tied at first place with 294. "I thought we played a lot better today than we have been playing all year," Wake Forest coach Dianne Dailey said. "To be shooting six-over instead of 16-over is a good start. It was a good solid performance from almost everyone on the team. I think it will give them some confidence to play better tomorrow." The Tar Heel Invitational continues on Saturday and Sunday at UNC Finley Golf Course, which features a 72-par and 6,285-yard layout. Tee times for the second round begin at 9 a.m., with teams starting on both the back and front nine. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
