UNC Women Golfers Fall To 13th In East Regional

BATON ROUGE, LA. -- The University of North Carolina Women's golf team fell from sixth place into a tie with Texas A&M for 13th after the second day of competition at the East Regionals. What began as a promising tourament for the Tar Heels fell apart as round two unfolded. Senior Beth Lever began the day tied for first place, yet, Lever could not keep pace and eventually finished the day with a nine-over-par,81 for a two round total of 149 leaving her tied for 36th. However, there was some encouragement for theTar Heels due to the performance of Ashley Prange who held her ground after shooting a second consecutive 73 which lands the Sophomore in a tie for 17th and just eight strokes off the lead at 146. The remaining UNC golfrers playing in the regional Meghan Adams, Abby Spector and Romi Irons continued to slide off the pace with second round total of 153, 160 and 161, respectively.
The 2002 East Regional is led in team standings by Duke University who
completed the second round at five-under-par, 571. The Blue Devils are lead
by the regionals' individual scoring leader, Leigh AnneHardin. Hardin
completed her second consecutive sub-par performance after firing a
five-under-par, 67 for a 138 total. The University of Florida follows in
second in team standings at five strokes off the lead at 576. The Gators are
feeling the heat from Southeastern Conference foe Auburn at 580 while
Atlantic Coast Conference representative Wake Forest is pushing the Tigers
at 581 and the Bulls of South Florida round out the top five at 585.
Following Duke's Hardin in second place in individual scoring is Auburn's
Celeste Troche at five-under-par,139. Meredith Duncan of Lousiana State and
JameicaDuncombe of South Florida follow at 140 while Meghan Francella of
Memphis rounds out the top five at 141.
The 54-hole event continues through Saturday at LSU's University Club whch features a par 72, 6,276-yard layout. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 21-24 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Washington.
