Women's Golf Places Fourth At ACC Championships

Lake Buena Vista, Fl - The University of North Carolina's women's golf team finished the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship with a team total 945 and fourth place finish after Sunday's final round. Duke took home the ACC crown after edging Wake Forest by three strokes with a score of 899. Florida State finished in third with a 936 total while Maryland and NC State finished out the field with scores of 952 and 1024 respectively. In individual play, Duke freshman Virada Nirpathpongporn fired a final round 76 and finished the tournament even par to lead all players. Wake Forest's Kathryn Brenny finished in second place with a five-over 221 while Wake's Marta Preito and FSU's Kristin Tamulis each finished with 7-over 223 scores to tie for third Freshman Ashley Prange led the Heels in scoring with an eighth place 229. Junior Beth Lever finished in 16th with a 239 and junior Shelly McKevitt finished one spot behind tied for 17th after a final total of 240. Finishing out scoring for the Tar Heels were junior Heather Angell and sophomore Abby Spector. Angell's 241 was good for 19th place and Spector's 243earned her a tie for 21st. The event was held at Disney's Palm Course, which features a par 72, 6183 yard layout. The tournament was also an official Carlyle Cup event. Duke's first place finish won them three points and helped the Devils clinch a win in the inaugural Carlyle Cup all-sports competition. With victories in baseball and women's golf today, the devils now lead the contest 26-21.
