Carolina Women Golfers In Third Place At Bryan National Collegiate

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The North Carolina women's golf team placed third after carding a 12-over-par 300 total in the first round of the Bryan Park National Collegiate. Duke leads the field of 18 teams with a six-over-par 294 total. Having fired a two-over-par 74 total, sophomore Kate Thomas, of Australia, junior Sydney Crane, of Jamestown, N.C., and junior Lauren Hunt, of Little River, S.C., all finished the day in 11th place. Senior Ann Laney, of Charlotte, N.C., carded a six-over-par 78 total to tie for 42nd place and freshman Jordan Allyne, of Bellevue, Wash., carded a 12-over-par 84 total to tie for 81st place. Steffi Kirchmayr of the College of Charleston fired a three-under-par 69 to grab the early individual lead. One stroke behind Kirchmayr was a three way tie between Duke's Amanda Blumenhert, Arkansas's Stacey Lewis and NC State's Lauren Doughtie. Florida State's Whitney Brummett shot a one-under-par 71 for fifth place and Florida's Ornella Jouven is currently in sixth after carding an equal-to-par 72 total. Behind Duke in the team race is Florida with a total of 298. Auburn and Flurman fell one stroke behind the third-placed Tar Heels. Virginia and NC State finished the day tied for sixth with a 302 total. The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Bryan Park Golf Course, a par 72, 6,384-yard layout.
