Nov. 22, 2005
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two North Carolina field hockey players have earned All-America honors for the 2005 season. Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran has been named to the 16-member NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) Division I first team and junior midfielder Rachel Dawson has been named to the second team. Tran is the 27th player in school history to earn first-team All-America honors and the second in her family, following her older sister, Amy, an All-America for UNC in 2000. A three-year starter for the Tar Heels, Katy Tran also earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC Tournament honors this year as a senior, when she served as team co-captain. UNC finished 14-7 in 2005 and made its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance. Dawson, a first-team All-America selection in 2004 as a sophomore, led UNC in goals this season with 11, despite missing five games while competing internationally. She was a member of the U.S. team for the Junior World Cup in Chile in September and joined the U.S. National Team for a tournament in Argentina in November. Dawson also had eight assists in her 16 games with the Tar Heels to lead the team in points with 30. Tran is one of seven Atlantic Coast Conference players on the 16-member first team. Also honored were Emily Beach (Maryland), Lauren Crandall (Wake Forest), Katie Grant (Duke), Paula Infante (Maryland), Hilary Linton (Duke) and Lauren Powley (Maryland). Maryland finished as the 2005 NCAA champion, with Duke as the runner-up and Wake Forest a semifinalist. Dawson was one of four ACC players on the second team, joined by Maeka Boreel (Wake Forest), Jackie Ciconte (Maryland) and Nicole Dudek (Duke). Duke's Laura Suchoski, Maryland's Kathryn Masson and Wake's Ariel Meyers were named to the third team. In addition to the NFHCA honors, Dawson was named to the Womensfieldhockey.com All-America first team and Tran was named to the second team.
