UNC Field Hockey Tops Penn State To Advance in NCAAs

IOWA CITY, Iowa–The UNC field hockey team defeated Penn State 1-0 Saturday to advance to the second round of play in the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels will face host Iowa Sunday at 2 p.m. Central Standard Time, with the winner advancing to field hockey's final four. The top team from each of the four regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be played at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., Nov. 19 and 21.

The only goal of Saturday's game was by Carolina sophomore Abby Martin, who scored on a penalty stroke with 13:09 remaining in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Amy Tran saved seven shots for the Tar Heels.

Carolina is now 16-5, while Penn State finished the year 17-5. Penn State won the season's first meeting with UNC, 1-0 on Sept. 5 in State College, Pa.
