Carolina Field Hockey Players Earn All-Region Honors.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Six University of North Carolina field hockey players have earned South Region All-America honors, announced Monday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Carrie Lingo, Abby Martin and Amy Tran were named to the first team, while Susan Hayes, Meredith Keller and Abbey Woolley were named to the second team.

As members of the first team, Lingo, Hayes and Tran are in the running for All-America honors, which will be announced on Nov. 19. All three are current members of the U.S. National Team.

Lingo, a senior midfielder from Rehoboth Beach, Del., was a team captain during the 2001 season and ranked fourth on the team with nine goals. She earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC Tournament honors this fall.

Martin, a senior back from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., was a 2001 All-ACC selection and led UNC in scoring this year with 40 points. She finished her career ranked eighth on UNC's all-time scoring list (128), ninth on the school's goals list (48) and tied for tenth on the school's assists list (30).

Tran, a junior goalkeeper from Grantville, Pa., was a first-team All-America pick in 2000 and earned All-ACC honors this season. She finished the year with a goals against average of 1.56. Hayes, a senior back from Bethesda. Md., served as a team captain this season. She was named to the 2001 All-ACC Tournament team.

Keller, a junior midfielder from Greenville, Del., scored six goals and contributed seven assists for UNC this season while starting all 21 games.

Woolley, a senior forward/midfielder from Ocean City, N.J., ranked second on the team in scoring this season with 32 points and earned All-ACC honors. The Tar Heels finished the 2001 season 14-7 following a loss to Michigan last Saturday in NCAA Tournament play.
