O'Donnell Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Freshman goalie Brianna O'Donnell had eight saves as Carolina field hockey beat fourth-ranked Boston College, 4-0, and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for October 2-8, 2006. It was UNC's first win over a higher ranked team this season. The Collegeville, Pa., freshman also had five saves in a 6-0 win over Yale last week. The Tar Heels (11-4) have seven shutouts this season, including five in the last six games. O'Donnell, a true freshman, has played every minute of the season in goal.

Katie Miller helped lead Carolina to a fourth-place finish in the Lady Tar Heel Invitational as she was to top Tar Heel and finished with a six-over-par 222 total. Carolina, ranked 14th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, carded a fourth-place finish, 10 strokes behind champion Vanderbilt.

Miller carded a four-over 76 in the first round followed by an even par 72 in the second and a two-over 74 in the final round. Miller saved the best for last as this was her top finish after four years of playing in annual event.

Carolina carded a 903 total after rounds of 304-296-303. The 17-team field was extremely tough as 10 of the nation's top-20 teams were participating The Tar Heels return to action Oct. 13-15 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.

JESSICA MAXWELL

Maxwell recorded an assist in each match and anchored the UNC defense as the Tar Heel women's soccer team shutout a pair of Top 25 ACC opponents last well. Maxwell assisted on Carolina's second goal as UNC held No. 16 Virginia to eight shots in Carolina's 2-0 win over the Cavaliers Thursday. It was the first time since October 22, 1999 that UNC had held Virginia scoreless, breaking a nine-match string in which the Cavs had scored against UNC. Against No. 24 Duke on Sunday, Maxwell assisted on the Heels' second goal as Carolina limited Duke to four shots and recorded a shutout of the Blue Devils for the first time since October 1, 2003. Duke had a five-match scoring streak against Carolina broken in the 3-0 Tar Heels' win.

UNC's top doubles duo went into the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships unseeded but recorded five straight wins, including an upset of the nation's No. 10 ranked team, to advance to the quarterfinal round. The All-American Championships are sponsored by the ITA and are considered one of the ITA's collegiate grand slam events. Gullan and Stone went 3-0 in tournament qualifying to make the main draw and then went 2-1 to make the quarterfinals. The Tar Heel doubles team advanced further than any unseeded qualifier in the tournament.
