Carolina Hosts Wake Saturday For Top-Five Battle
Oct. 2, 2008
The North Carolina field hockey team, 8-2 and ranked No. 4 in the nation, will host third-ranked Wake Forest Saturday for an Atlantic Coast Conference battle. The teams will meet at Francis E. Henry Stadium at noon. There is no charge for admission to the game and the first 100 fans to arrive (beginning at 11 a.m.) each will receive a free pair of UNC Crocs. Fan parking for the game will be extremely limited due to the UNC-Connecticut football game later on Saturday. Public parking is available in campus lots that offer football public parking for an $8 fee. For a more information on campus parking on Saturday, go to the UNC Department of Public Safety site at www.dps.unc.edu. The season's first meeting between UNC and Wake Forest, on Sept. 5 in Winston-Salem, ended in a 2-1 Demon Deacon win that was decided by penalty strokes. Ten of the last 14 games between UNC and Wake have gone into extra periods and the Deacons have won six of those. Overall, Carolina leads the series 30-18-4 and won all three of last year's matchups, including an overtime victory in the ACC title game. Saturday's game is this year's designated conference matchup between the teams. UNC comes into the game 1-0 in ACC play following a win at Duke last Saturday. Wake is 9-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play, with a win over Duke and a loss to Maryland.
Junior forward Danielle Forword leads Carolina in scoring with 15 goals this season. She also has four assists for 34 points, more than her total in any previous season. Senior Britt van Beek, the team captain, has eight goals and two assists this season. Junior midfielder Illse Davids leads UNC in assists with five and also has six goals. Junior Melanie Brill and redshirt freshman Elizabeth Stephens have scored four goals each.
