Five Tar Heels Help U.S. To Pan Am Final
July 22, 2007
With five current and former Tar Heels on the roster, the U.S. beat Chile 4-1 Saturday in field hockey to advance to the Pam American Games title match in Rio de Janeiro. The Americans will meet five-time champion Argentina on Tuesday for the gold medal and an automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games. Carolina alum Carrie Lingo scored one of the U.S. goals on Saturday as the team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Also in the starting lineup were former Tar Heels Kate Barber and Amy Tran and rising senior Rachel Dawson. Katelyn Falgowski, who will be a freshman at UNC this fall, came off the bench. The U.S. team opened play on July 15 with a 4-1 win over Netherlands Antilles. Lingo had a hat trick in the game. On July 17, the U.S. beat Cuba 7-0, then picked up another shutout in the following game, 6-0 against Canada on July 19. Barber, the team captain, scored twice in that game and Lingo also had a goal. Tran, the team's starting goalkeeper, has given up just two goals in four games.
