Field Hockey Signs Four for 2002 Season

May 29, 2002

CHAPEL HILL -- Four players have signed letters of intent to join the North Carolina field hockey program, UNC coach Karen Shelton announced on Wednesday. Tiffany Hoos, Karen Mann, Brooke Miller and Naomi Weatherald will make up the Tar Heels' freshman class for 2002.

"I'm delighted to have this strong class of four coming in," Shelton said. "They play a diverse range of positions, and I expect them all to be able to assist our program this season."

Hoos is a 5-8 forward/midfielder from Richmond, British Columbia., and a member of the Canadian World Cup Development Program. Mann is a 5-4 forward/midfielder from North Vancouver, British Columbia. Both have played for Canada's Under-18 and Under-19 teams.

Miller is a 5-4 midfielder-back from Hummelstown, Pa. , and currently is an alternate for the U.S. Under-19 team. She played on the U.S. Under-18 and Under-16 teams and twice earned All-America honors playing for Lower Dauphin High School.

Weatherald is a 5-8 back from Delamera, South Australia, where she attended Woodlands Secondary School.

The Tar Heels return 17 players from the 2001 team, which finished 14-7 overall. Carolina opens the 2002 season on Aug. 31 with a home game against Michigan, the defending NCAA Champion.
