Six Tar Heels Picked For U.S. Olympic Qualifier
Jan. 29, 2004
Six former North Carolina players have been named to the U.S. Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier Team, announced this week by coach Beth Anders. Kate Barber, Meredith Keller, Carrie Lingo, Kristen McCann, Peggy Storrar and Amy Tran are part of the 18-player roster for the competition, set for March 18-29 in Auckland, New Zealand. The U.S. will be one of 10 teams competing and must finish in the top five to earn a berth in the 2004 Summer Games.
Barber and Storrar, long-time national team veterans, were members of the 2000 Olympic Qualifier team. Lingo, McCann and Tran have represented the U.S. at the Pan American Games. Keller will be making her first appearance in a major international competition.
The team will depart for Australia in mid-February to continue its training. At the qualifying tournament, the U.S. team will play in Pool B with Korea, Spain, Japan and Russia. Pool A includes top-seeded Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and the Ukraine.
The U.S. team was finalized during a recent nine-game series against Ireland and Canada, played at Stanford University. McCann was one of the team's leading scorers with six goals in the nine games, and Barber scored four.
