Tar Heels Named To Junior National Teams
Jan. 6, 2004
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four Tar Heel field hockey players have earned spots on U.S. national teams and one has been named as an alternate following A Camp trials in Virginia Beach, Va., last weekend. Rachel Dawson and Carey Fetting-Smith were named to the U.S. Under-21 team and Laree Beans and Ashley Judge were named to the U.S. Under-19 team. Dawson also will play for the Under-19 team, and Brooke Miller will serve as an alternate for that squad. Beans (from Bethlehem, Pa.) , Dawson (from Berlin, N.J.), Judge (from Wilmington, Del.) and Miller (from Hummelstown, Pa.) are rising sophomores on the Carolina squad and Fetting-Smith (from Baltimore, Md.) is a rising senior. Dawson, one of six players named to both rosters, and Fetting-Smith played for the U.S. Under-20 team in 2003. The two U.S. junior teams will compete in various domestic and international events in 2004 and will serve to help the U.S. prepare for next year's Pan American Junior Championships and the 2005 Junior World Cup. Players were chosen to participate in A Camp based on their performance in other USA Field Hockey programs and events. The selection camp ran from Jan. 2-4 at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach.
