COLLEGE PARK, Md.-The University of North Carolina field hockey team, which had not lost to an Atlantic Coast Conference team all season, was knocked out of the ACC Tournament Friday night with a 2-1 loss to Virginia in the second round of penalty strokes.Tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, top-seeded UNC and fourth-seeded Virginia battled through two overtime periods and a first round of penalty strokes before the Cavaliers gained the edge in the second round.

UNC is now 17-3 and awaits Tuesday's announcement of the NCAA Tournament field. Virginia is 14-6 and advances to face Maryland in the conference championship game on Sunday.

Junior Abby Martin put the Tar Heels up 1-0 with 17:31 remaining in the first half when she scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Jana Toepel. UNC held the lead until just after halftime, when Virginia's Katie Slocom scored an unassisted goal from the field to tie the score.

The teams remained scoreless throughout two 15-minute overtime sessions of seven-on-seven play. In the first round of penalty strokes, each team scored on four of its five opportunities, forcing a second round of penalty strokes. In the final round, Virginia converted three of its opportunities and UNC only one.
