COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Top-ranked Maryland scored the game's only goal less than 10 minutes into the second half to hand the seventh-ranked North Carolina field hockey team a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. UNC fell to 11-6 overall and wrapped up Atlantic Coast Conference play at 1-4. The Terrapins improved to 17-1 overall, 4-1 in the ACC.

Maryland's Susie Rowe scored the gamewinner 9:27 after halftime on an assist from Janneke van Leeuwen. The loss was UNC's second in a row and the fifth this season to come by one goal.

After a first half in which the Tar Heels had four shots to the Terrapins' six, Maryland exploded for 16 shots in the second half, while UNC had five. For the game, Maryland had 10 penalty corners, seven of them in the second half. Carolina had just two corners, both in the second half. Tar Heel goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell, a freshman from Collegeville, Pa., had a season-high 12 saves in the game. Maryland keeper Kathryn Masson made three.

UNC's next game is on Saturday, when the Tar Heels travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on No. 3 Old Dominion. Carolina closes out the regular season next Sunday, Oct. 29, with a 1 p.m. home game against Radford. UNC will host the ACC Championship on Nov. 2, 3 and 5 at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
