Wake Forest Shuts Out UNC, 2-0

Oct. 20, 2002

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team fell 2-0 at Wake Forest Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. With the loss, the No. 12 Tar Heels are 8-8 overall. No. 4 Wake Forest improved to 13-2.

The Demon Deacons scored a goal in each half. The first came in the 12th minute of play when sophomore Kelly Dostal batted a pass from junior Kelly Doton past UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran. Wake got its second goal in the 61st minute when senior Heather Aughinbaugh scored unassisted from the field.

Wake Forest had 15 shots to 14 by UNC, but the Tar Heels had more penalty corners, 11 to 7 by Wake.

The win was Wake Forest's 12th consecutive win and its 21st in a row at Kentner Stadium, the Demon Deacons' home field. Wake has beaten Carolina in the last five meetings, including a 2-1 win earlier this season in Chapel Hill. That game, on Sept. 29, was the season's designated Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

UNC plays its final ACC game of the season on Saturday at Maryland. Both the Tar Heels and the No. 1-ranked Terrapins are 2-1 in ACC play. Wake Forest, which leads the league at 3-0, plays its final ACC game at Virginia on Sunday.
