Coach Shelton comments on the big win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Before Friday's game against Michigan, the third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team celebrated the careers of its five seniors. After the game, the Tar Heels celebrated their 14th win of the season, 4-0 against the fifth-ranked Wolverines. The victory was UNC's fourth of the season against teams currently ranked in the top five. The Tar Heels are 14-1 overall, while Michigan is now 14-2, with both of its losses coming to UNC.

Playing before a crowd of 683 at Francis E. Henry Stadium, Carolina got on the board with 8:28 remaining in the half on a penalty corner goal by junior Carrie Lingo. Less than a minute later, senior Kristen McCann scored from the field to put UNC up 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, senior Holly Huff tipped in a shot by Lingo to put Carolina up by three with 11:54 to play. McCann added another goal, on a penalty corner with 6:48 remaining in the game, for the final score.

The seniors-Huff, McCann, Erin Cox, Kate Sidebottom and Jana Toepel-and their parents were honored on the field before the game. All five were in the starting lineup and played key roles in the win.
