WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.–The UNC field hockey team suffered its second loss of the season Saturday, 2-0 at Wake Forest. The Tar Heels are 8-2 on the year, 2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Wake Forest improved to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play.

The Demon Deacons got all the scoring they needed in the first half, on junior Jenny Everett's goal 8:22 before halftime. Wake Forest's other goal came with just eight seconds remaining in the game, on a break-away shot by freshman Maria Whitehead.

Wake Forest had only beaten Carolina on one other occasion. The Demon Deacons won 4-1 in the teams' first meeting in 1972, but UNC led the series 23-1-4 heading into Saturday's game.

The Tar Heels will hit the road again on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game at Duke. UNC won the teams' first meeting of the season, 4-0 on Aug. 29. Sunday's game will not count in the ACC standings.
